15mm Ground Zero Games - Colonial Shack Set, Rust!

Hi All,

Today I continued work on my Gruntz: Spec Ops project. These fantastic Colonial shacks from GZG were based/assembled last night, in preparation for painting today. So far I've added rust, my intention is to use Vallejo Chipping Medium over the rust before the main colour scheme. The paint can then be chipped away leaving a (hopefully) satisfactory weathered look. I have to say though, that even at this stage I'm really impressed with the overall look, I hope the additional colours don't take away from this.

The process I've used is as follows:
  1. Undercoat with Vallejo Black Surface Primer
  2. Basecoat (all but the inside walls) with Warcolours - Metallic Silver (slightly thinned)
  3. Apply the darkest rust areas with Vallejo Panzer Aces - Dark Rust
  4. Apply the lighter rust areas with Vallejo Panzer Aces - Light Rust
  5. Wash the whole area with Vallejo Model Colour - Light Rust Wash
  6. While the area is still wet from the wash, use a cotton bud to scrape off some of the rust revealing the fresh metal
  7. Apply a coat of Vallejo Polyurethane Matt Varnish
This whole process was completed using an airbrush. I leave them for four hours to dry before adding another coat of varnish. Once this is dry I can apply the chipping medium, followed by some colours.
